The JBay Wind Farm MTB Challenge has undergone various evolutionary changes throughout its six year history. Now, the seventh instalment promises to be the best yet, offering an epic day out for the whole family.
The event moves to a new home this year in the form the spectacular Twin Valley Nature Estate just outside Jeffreys Bay. This residential eco estate with its beautiful vistas over the Indian Ocean lends itself to a contained, safe carnival atmosphere and gives great access to the trails which have become a trademark of the event over the years.
The new venue will have a race village setup based around a 20m closed marquee tent as well as 10m Bedouin stretch tent. It will play host to a spit braai for purchase by riders, their families and supporters, while a live band will provide live music and there will be various activities for the kids during the day as well.
Out on the trails there will once again be something for all mountain-bike skill and fitness levels, with three routes: The 85km is traditionally an ideal shakedown training ride ahead of Transbaviaans in August and the route is always technical and challenging. The 50km marathon featuring a lot of singletrack, while the 25km fun ride is ideal for those just getting into mountain biking. All three routes take in the impressive Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm, giving the race the distinction of being the only single-day race in the country which traverses a wind farm.
On the wind farm, riders will have the chance to ride along roads interspersed by 80m tall wind turbines towers, spread more than 500m apart. The wind farm site spans 3 700 hectares on which there are 60 wind turbines. This project is one of the first and largest wind farms in South Africa.
Another great addition to the 2019 event is the addition of a 10km trail run and 5km fun walk. Both of these will also give people the opportunity to experience the wind turbines.
